Aintree Betting Preview

13.45 – EFT Construction Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (GBB Race) – 3m

COEUR SEREIN (8th), IF THE CAP FITS (6th) and WINTER FOG (4th) all ran well to finish in their respective orders in the Pertemps at the Cheltenham Festival and it’s hard to look beyond them in this event. The first two mentioned should be better suited to this course while Winter Fog has excellent claims off only a pound higher mark. PARTY BUSINESS ran a tremendous race to finish fifth in the Martin Pipe and should relish the step up in trip, though last year’s second J’AI FROID gets the services of Adam Wedge and is handicapped to go well off the same mark as twelve months ago.

Selections: COEUR SEREIN, IF THE CAP FITS, WINTER FOG, PARTY BUSINESS, J’AI FROID

14.25 – Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race) – 2m4f

THREE STRIPE LIFE sets a clear standard on his runner-up effort to Sir Gerhard in the Ballymore at the Cheltenham Festival and had previously filled the same spot in two other Grade 1 events in Ireland. With no Sir Gerhard in his way this time round, Gordon Elliott’s charge can land his first top-level event, though Colonel Mustard is a danger.

Selections: THREE STRIPE LIFE

15.00 – Poundland Maghull Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race) – 1m7f

EDWARDSTONE has had a brilliant campaign in which he’s won five on the bounce and landed his second Grade 1 when powering clear in the Arkle last month. Alan King’s charge has had some hard races this term but he’s a winning machine, does everything right and can cap off a fine season with a third Grade 1 victory.

Selections: EDWARDSTONE

15.35 – JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race) – 3m

FLOORING PORTER looked in no mood to be denied when defeating both Thyme Hill and Champ to land a second successive win in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last month. If he can get another uncontested lead, he’s going to be hard to beat once more. THYME HILL won this last year and was only a couple of lengths behind the former at Cheltenham last month and will be much more comfortable back at this venue. Philip Hobbs’ charge is a very smart stayer and can make more of a race of it with the favourite. Champ can follow them home in third.

Selections: FLOORING PORTER, THYME HILL

16.15 – Betway Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race) – 3m

SHAN BLUE was only sixth in the Ryanair last time but I just don’t think Cheltenham suits him and he’s better judged on his Charlie Hall effort, where he would have bolted up by a wide-margin until falling late on. He’s back in handicap company off a fair mark of 148 and while he might represent much value to some, he’s a solid option to reach the frame at the very least. ESPOIR DE ROMAY ran very well behind Nuts Well last month after four months off so will be better for that run and would have at least finished second in a Grade 1 here last year until falling two out behind Chantry House. He should make a bold bid off top-weight.

Selections: SHAN BLUE, ESPOIR DE ROMAY

17.15 – Randox Grand National Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race) – 4m2f

Onto the Grand National, the race we have been waiting for! ANY SECOND NOW ran a hell of a race to finish third in this twelve months ago despite getting hardly any luck and given how smoothly his preparation has gone this time round, he may go two places better. MOUNT IDA is a classy mare and while she’s not the most fluent over an obstacle, she’s a strong stayer and would have place claims with a clear round. Of some others, DISCORAMA ran well to finish seventh in this last year with no prep-run and could finish closer with a run under his belt for Paul Nolan and Bryan Cooper. FIDDLERONTHEROOF and ENJOY D’ALLEN have both been aimed at this all season and have the right sort of profile to make a serious impact with luck-in running.

Selections: ANY SECOND NOW, MOUNT IDA, DISCORAMA, ENJOY D’ALLEN, FIDDLERONTHEROOF
